Kumbukwewa Sri Nagarukkarama ancient Tampita Viharaya is an image house built in the Nagarukkarama temple built during the Kandyan Kingdom era in a design made popular during this period.
A Tampita Viharaya is a structure built on a wooden platform which rests on number of stone stumps usually 3-4 feet tall. The roof is held by a structure built of timber and the walls are generally made of wattle and daub. Walls inside the chamber is more or less always covered in paintings drawn mainly in Kandyan style.
The tampita viharaya of Sri Nagarukkaramaya is built on 16 stone pillar stumps which are clustered in 4 pillars at each corner. None of the pillars are finished and is in raw form like in many other tampita viharaya’s. A half height wall is built around the outer edge of the building with 16 wood carved pillars holding the roof.
A 5 step wooden ladder staircase is built to enter the building. The inner chamber is built leaving a circumambulating path around the inner chamber, The outer wall of the inner chamber has been painted with murals but only side remains today allowing us to imagine how it would have looked during its golden days. Other sides have been plastered and painted over. The roof is tiled
This Tampita Viharaya in Kumbukwewa village in the Katupotha PS division has been declared as an protected monument in 1967.02.23.
