On your next trip to Badulla to explore the early settlements, make sure to take a break and visit Madulsima Pitamaruwa World’s End.
Located 180 km from Colombo, you first need to reach Passara town. From there, take the Pitamaruwa Road to reach Madulsima, where this stunning viewpoint awaits.
According to legend, the name ‘Pitamaruwa’ originates from the practice of exchanging tea boxes between caravans at this location.
In addition to the well-known World’s End at Horton Plains, Sri Lanka is home to several other breathtaking viewpoints with sheer cliffs, often referred to as mini World’s Ends. These include Madulsima Mini World’s End, Selagama Mini World’s End, Pitawala Pathana Mini World’s End, and Deanston Mini World’s End. The latter two are nestled within the Dumbara mountain range, while Madulsima World’s End lies at the edge of the scenic Roeberry Estate tea plantation.
Upon arrival, visitors are greeted with a stunning panorama of rolling mountains interspersed with patches of dry forests. Unlike Horton Plains, which offers a view of mountain ranges and rocky escarpments, Madulsima World’s End provides an expansive outlook over vast plains stretching toward Sri Lanka’s eastern coastline. This picturesque viewpoint, located at an elevation of 1,200–1,300 meters above sea level, falls under the management of the Uva Province Tourism Board.
The highest point of the rock belongs to Roeberry Estate, while the lower regions extend towards Dorapoda in the Bibile district. With its ever-present mist and refreshing climate, Madulsima offers a stunning view of cascading waterfalls such as Umang Oya, Bambarabotuwa, and Kekunagala.
To reach Madulsima World’s End, one must travel from Madulsima towards Metigahatenna, taking a right turn at Kuruvigolla and following Pitamaruwa Road past Ambalama Junction towards Cocogalla. While the road has been newly paved for a short stretch, the remainder is rugged and best navigated by a sturdy 4WD vehicle or a three-wheeler.
A notable landmark on the route is D.S. Rock, which bears a striking resemblance to Sri Lanka’s first Prime Minister, Hon. D. S. Senanayake. Upon passing Cocogalla and reaching Elamanna, travelers must take another right turn towards the signpost indicating “Mini World’s End 1.1 km.”
The final stretch requires a short trek along a marked footpath, beginning near a small summer hut. After walking approximately 100 meters, visitors are rewarded with a breathtaking hilltop view, where distant rock formations like Dehigala and Dorapoda emerge through the misty forest cover.
