Traveling on the road from Kantale to Trincomalee, past the Mollipotana area, you’ll see a range of hills on the left. This small mountainous area has about three peaks, each over 200 meters high.
One of these peaks is located near the Kurulupanna Wewa Reservoir (Pareippanna Kulama), a large, solitary rock hill. The top of this hill is covered by a single rock slab spanning an area of about 25–30 acres.
The ruins of a large ancient monastery are scattered across both the peak and the base of this hill. The ruins on the peak include a small stupa, the foundation of a padhanaghara, seven stone ponds, and a massive, ruined stone wall over 500 meters long, built with huge stone blocks. The ancient Bodhi tree that once stood here has been damaged by elephants and was even destroyed by non-Buddhists on one occasion.
Unfortunately, the ruins at the base of the hill have been damaged by human activities, including intentional destruction.
This peak, one of the highest in Trincomalee, offers stunning panoramic views on a clear day. You can see the Seruwila Stupa (30 km away), the Ritigala mountain range (55 km away), the Thiriyaya mountains (50 km away), and the Trincomalee harbor. The constant breeze makes it a pleasant place for local tourists, who often climb the rock to enjoy the scenery. However, their visits have also contributed to the damage of the archaeological ruins.
Sadly, this archaeological site has not yet been given proper attention by the Department of Archaeology and has met the same fate as thousands of other archaeological sites in the Trincomalee district.
