Most of the inscriptions on the site belong to the special category of inscriptions called “Waharala” inscriptions. One inscription is historically important as it records the name of the king which enables us to place the period in which the temple existed. It records a field in the extent of two payas (2 amuna) and those in the extent of Karisa (4 amuna) donated by King Kanittatissa (164-192 CE). A white sandalwood forest is found next to the viharaya. The ancient name of the complex has been Abhaya Viharaya, according to the inscriptions.

The stupa at the top had been dug from the top by treasure hunters in search of valuables enshrined within when discovered. This site was declared as an archaeological reserve in 2016 and conservation work started a few years later.
