Watawala Ella Falls – වටවල ඇල්ල

This 40m Watawala fall is formed of three separate streams, of which the middle is the most scenic. Each stream begins at the Rambukkannde Mountain of the Uda Karavita Forest Reserve, and winds through the jungle to converge and cascade from a small rock.

Due to recent colonization, and the digging of illegal gem pits, the upper reach of the fall is polluted. However, the area is still home to numerous tree species including Palmyra (Caryota urens), valuable medicinal herbs, and animals such as deer and wild boar. Water from the fall irrigates the land of the surrounding villagers, who derive their income from gemming and from tea, rubber and paddy cultivation. The fall is situated in the Ratnapura District in the Nivithgala Divisional Secretariat. Take the Ratnapura – Manana road, and the fall can be seen about 600m from the 12th mile post.

The upper Watawala Ella fall is approximately 10 meters and you can reach the top of it by taking the Janapadaya Road from the 14th  milepost on the Nivithigala – Karawita Road. Travel 2-3 km on the road to reach the point where you need to walk to the stream.

The lower part of the Watawala Ella Fall is 40 high and to reach this segment you need to travel upto Karawita and take the road towards Paranawaththa Junction. Take the left turn from this junction and after about 100m in this road you will notice a foot pathway in right hand side to reach the waterfall.

Both these paths have no direction or landmarks. You will need the guide of villagers to locate the exact locations. The marker on the Google Maps below points to a approximate location. Please see directions above.
