Apalawatta Ambalama is a brick and mortar wayside rest in the Urapola area in Gampaha District. The history of this Ambalama is not known. Nine brick pillars hold the roof of the building and a half-height wall is built around the building. Out of the nine pillars, four pillars at the corners are square and the others are cylindrical.

The artistically richest ambalams in the country we find today belong to the pre-colonial era where builders considered the artistic value of the structure as well as the utility. However, with the passing of time, this ambalama was seen only as adding utility and much effect was not put on the artistic side of it.

Apalawatta Ambalama is such a structure where only utility has been a driving factor in building the Ambalama. All the pillars are plain and carry no artwork.

Seats in the ambalama are made of cement along the sides except the side with the entrance. A unique feature of this ambalama is that the seats along the 3 sides are built at 3 different heights to accommodate different social classes.

A Gal Panthaliya, a water vessel made of stone which was at the front of the Ambalama (as seen on some of the pictures) until recently is missing.

Today to floor of the Ambalama lies below the road level probably due to the road being filled and raised over time. Behind the Ambalama is a paddy field lying at a level well below the road.
