About one kilometer along the Point Pedro Road from the Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil in Jaffna, on the left-hand side of the road, stands a crumbling and neglected old mansion. This structure, combining elements of both colonial and Hindu architectural styles, is known in Tamil as Manthiri Manai, meaning “Minister’s Abode.” Much like the nearby Poothathamby Arch, which lies approximately 100 meters before it, the origins of this residence remain unclear and are shrouded in speculation.

Theories of Origins

Over time, various theories have emerged concerning the history of this intriguing building. Some scholars propose that the inner sections of the structure date back to the 15th century and were possibly constructed during the reign of King Paranirupasingam, who ruled from Nallur (Pushparatnam, 2014). Others suggest that the mansion may have formed part of the royal palace complex belonging to King Sangili, the last regional monarch of the Jaffna Sub Kingdom. Given its name, some interpretations assume it was the residence of a minister serving under King Sangili.

Contrary to these royal associations, a different view is presented in an article published by Tamilnet on 10 October 2009. The article downplays any ancient or royal significance tied to the mansion, asserting instead that it was simply a chaultry (Ambalama or rest house) constructed in the early 19th century. According to this account, the mansion, along with the belfry of the nearby Chaddai-naathar temple, was built by a generous donor from the Vannarpannai area in Jaffna.

This more recent origin seems plausible, especially considering the complete absence of concrete historical records linking the building to any known palace or royal minister. Supporting this view, an inscription found on the structure reportedly states that it was built by an individual named A.S. Tambiyapillai in 1890 (Pushparatnam, 2014).

Current Status and Restoration

Despite the uncertainties surrounding its past, the Manthiri Manai stands as a valuable remnant of Jaffna’s built heritage. The building has now been taken under the care of the Department of Archaeology, which has initiated efforts to conserve and restore it.
