The Gasnawa Ambalama is a large rectangular resting house constructed from kabook (laterite) and mortar. It features low perimeter walls that double as built-in seating, designed at varying heights to reflect traditional social hierarchy and caste distinctions. Its timber roof is supported by eight kabook pillars—two framing the front entrance and six positioned along the side walls—creating an open, well-ventilated shelter.
In ancient times, people traveled from place to place on foot or by cart. Pilgrimages and trading journeys were measured in days rather than hours, making the availability of resting places an essential part of travel. To meet this need, ambalams, or wayside rest houses, were constructed at strategic locations along well-travelled routes.
These ambalams provided travelers with a safe place to rest overnight, prepare simple meals, and seek shelter from the elements. They were typically built beside frequently used roads, with locations carefully selected to ensure access to essential resources such as wells or streams, enabling travelers to obtain water for drinking and cooking.
Although many ambalams were modest in appearance, they played an indispensable role in supporting travelers. Their simple yet durable construction offered protection, comfort, and a welcome respite from the hardships of long journeys.

Architectural Features
The Gasnawa Ambalama is a comparatively large rectangular kabook-and-mortar structure. It features an open-fronted resting hall enclosed by low plastered perimeter walls. The front and rear walls are slightly higher than the side walls, while a lower partition wall divides the structure at its center.
The broad, flat tops of these walls serve as built-in seating for travelers. Providing seating at different heights was a customary feature of traditional ambalams, reflecting the social practices of the time, with the varying seat levels intended to accommodate people of different social ranks or castes.
The timber roof structure is supported by eight kabook pillars. Two pillars frame the front entrance, while six additional pillars rise from the low masonry side walls to support the roof, creating a sturdy and well-ventilated resting space.
