About
The Ambewela Farm was established by the British in the early 1940s, while the New Zealand Farm was set up in 1960 with assistance from the New Zealand government. Both these farms are managed under the Lanka Milk Foods Group. Of the two, only the New Zealand farm is open to visitors. It has become a popular attraction for those visiting Nuwara Eliya, particularly families with children.
Livestock and Landscape
The farms extend across more than 600 hectares (1,500 acres), with vast green pastures stretching to the horizon and dotted with striking black, brown, and white cattle, noticeably larger than the average cow found in Sri Lanka. Ambewela Farm raises Ayrshire cattle, while the New Zealand Farm is home to Friesian cows. Along the way, visitors will also notice a line of towering wind turbines marking the distant skyline.
A “Little England” Atmosphere
As you approach the visitor area, the surroundings evoke the feeling of a remote English countryside. The cool climate and unfamiliar landscape, combined with English-style staff cottages, meadows of imported grass, and European cattle, transform the setting into what feels like a small English town transplanted into the central highlands.
Visitor Experience
Visitors are allowed to enter selected areas of the farm, including sheds housing large stud bulls, rabbit breeding sections, and cow sheds. The automated milking process can also be observed, offering insight into modern dairy farming operations. At the entrance, there is a product outlet where farm produce, including fresh milk, can be purchased.
Essential Information
The farm is open to visitors throughout the year from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, with a nominal entrance fee charged. However, those planning a visit are advised to confirm accessibility in advance, as the farm may close for extended periods during disease outbreaks to ensure visitor safety.
Getting There
The farm is located about 20 kilometers (approximately 12.4 miles) from Nuwara Eliya town, a journey of around 45 minutes along the Horton Plains route. The drive itself is scenic and refreshing, passing through vegetable farms, lakes, and forested areas. En route, visitors will also pass the Kande Ela Reservoir, a worthwhile stop along this picturesque journey.
