The Siyambalapitiya Ambalama features plastered masonry pillars, an open-ventilated design, and a tile-clad pyramidal hipped roof. It includes multi-tiered interior benches illustrating historical caste distinctions, alongside a vaulted front alcove designed for a Pinthaliya drinking water pot.

Wayside rest houses built for the benefit of travelers were known as ambalams. In ancient Sri Lanka, these structures served as important stopping places where travelers could rest, seek shelter, and recover from the hardships of long journeys. They were used not only by ordinary people but also by kings, ministers, and other officials travelling throughout the country.

Constructing an ambalama for the benefit of all weary travellers was regarded as one of the highest acts of merit. The values of Sri Lankan Buddhist culture further reinforced this tradition by encouraging generosity and hospitality towards strangers. As a result, ambalams were commonly found at intervals of approximately 3.2 to 4.8 kilometers (2 to 3 miles) along major public roads. In some ancient villages, two or three ambalams were built to serve the needs of both travellers and the local community. In addition to their role as roadside rest houses, they also became important gathering places where villagers met for social interaction and community discussions.

Access Route

From the Kandy Road, take the old Mawanella Road, bypassing the modern bypass road, and continue to the ancient Mawanella Brick Bridge. Turn right and travel approximately 2.2 kilometers (1.4 miles) along Siyambalapitiya Road. The Siyambalapitiya Ambalama is located at the junction leading to the ancient Dodanthale Sri Seneviratnarama Purana Tampita Viharaya.

Architectural Layout and Open Design

The Siyambalapitiya Ambalama is a compact, open-sided structure built on a solid masonry floor. Its primary framework consists of robust square masonry pillars finished with white plaster. Medium-height perimeter walls connect the lower sections of the pillars, while the open spaces above allow abundant natural light and cross-ventilation.

Roof Structure

The structure is crowned by a pyramidal hipped roof clad with traditional semi-cylindrical clay tiles known as Sinhala Ulu. The roof is supported by a timber framework comprising wooden beams and rafters, reflecting the traditional construction methods used in historic ambalamas.

Interior Seating

Raised masonry benches extend along the interior perimeter of the structure. The rear bench is constructed slightly lower than the side benches, reflecting a traditional design feature found in many historic ambalams. These benches were intentionally built at different heights to accommodate people of different social ranks or castes, in keeping with the customs of the period.

Entrance and Water Pot Structure

Access to the Ambalama is provided through an open entrance framed by the two front masonry pillars. Immediately in front of the right-hand entrance pillar stands a distinctive low-masonry structure surmounted by a rounded-arched vault. This small alcove was most likely constructed to house a traditional water pot known as a Pinthaliya, ensuring that fresh drinking water was readily available to passing travellers and those resting at the Ambalama.
