Establishing highways and railways in Sri Lanka is credited to the British, the last foreign rulers to dominate the nation. The construction of these transportation networks by the British played a crucial role in promoting the economic growth of the country, fulfilling administrative functions, and expediting the movement of economic goods.

During the initial phase, roads were constructed to create links between major cities such as Galle, Colombo, Matara, Jaffna, Batticaloa, Trincomalee, Negombo, Kandy, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Hambantota, Nuwara Eliya, and various others. Strategically placed mileposts were installed to measure the distances between these destinations.

In the present day, the unit of measurement for distance has shifted from miles to kilometres. Furthermore, the conventional mileposts have been substituted with kilometre posts, constructed from uniform concrete, making them indistinguishable from one another.

Among the historical mileposts installed by the British Public Works Department, only a few remain scattered around the country. They are carved in stone and some of them are unique in their own way.

In the main Galle Road, the distance has been measured from the King’s House (the President’s House today). The 7th Mile Post of the Galle Road is found not on the Galle Road, but in front of St. Thomas Collage in Mount Lavinia, near its car park.

This aged milestone located at St. Thomas, Mount Lavinia, features a square top. One side of it bears the inscription “VII Miles 1817.” Having the year of installation carved, this is considered one of the oldest mileposts of the colonial era.
