Mawela Malwathu Purana Viharaya is an ancient temple with a Tampita Viharaya hidden away just few hundred meters away from Ganethenna Junction on Kandy Road in Kegalle District.
One of the unique features a visitor could observe today at this temple is the Tampita Vihara Ge. Tampita Vihara were a popular architectural feature of temples during the Kandyan era. The temple is built on top of granite stumps with wooden platform laid across the stumps.
Although generally pillar stumps are about 3 feet tall, these pillar at Mawela Malwathu viharaya is about 6 feet in high. The stone pillars are roughly cut. A wooden stair case rises to the main entrance of the tampita viharaya from the floor. The year 1939 has been carved on a post of the stairs.
Due to the height of the tampita viharaya, a second roof starting from the tampita viharaya has been extended outwards from all four sides creating a lower floor for the structure. This area is currently being used to conduct Sunday school classes.
The inner sanctum of the image house is filled with Buddha Statues. The main statue is a seated Buddha statue at the back wall. The robe of the buddha is painted in red. On the wall you see the sun and the moon painted at the top and his two chief disciples Sariputta and Moggallana theros have been painted below. On the two sidewalls four similar standing Buddha statues have been placed. All statues in the image house is complete with the head -dress (සිරස්පත) and a aura painted in the form of flames around the images.
To reach the temple, turn on to the Mahanthegama Road from Ganethenna junction. The temple lies just 200 meters on this road.
