Hindhawa Sri Wijesundararamaya Purana Viharaya is an ancient viharaya with a Tampita Viharaya belonging to the Kandyan era. The temple lies 7 km off Wariyapola in the Bamunakotuwa area. From the Wariyapola double roundabouts take the Kalugamuwa road which leads to Bamunakotuwa 4 way junction after traveling for 6 km. Take the right turn and travel fro 500 meters to reach the temple entrance on the left. Alternatively you can travel along the Kurunegala road fof 5.5 km upto Mahakeliya and turn towards Katupota. You will reach the Bamunakotuwa 4 way junction in 4km.

A Tampita Viharaya is a structure built on a wooden platform which rests on number of stone stumps usually 3-4 feet tall. The roof is held by a structure built of timber and the walls are generally made of wattle and daub. Walls inside the chamber is more or less always covered in paintings drawn mainly in Kandyan style.

The Tampita Viharaya at Hindhawa Sri Wijesundararamaya is believed to be built by Wijayasundara Rajakaruna, a commander in the army of king Sri Weeraparakrama Narendrasinghe (1707 – 1739) of Kandyan Kingdom. Inside the image house you will find a well crafted seated samadhi Buddha image under a dragon arch from the same era. The walls are painted with scenes from the Suvisi Vivaranaya, various deities and other patterns.

This temple has extended in to the rocky hill called Thimbalawa which rises to about 60 feet in the ancient past. Scattered ruins on this hill provides evidence of Hindhawa Viharaya’s existance atleast since the Dambadeniya kingdom.
