Kahatawilagedara Sri Swarnaprathibimbaramaya Tampita Rajamaha Viharaya is an ancient Tampita Viharaya belonging to the Kandyan era. The temple lies very close the Kirimetiyawa junction 13 km off Narammala, 21 km off Wariyapola and 12 km off Panduwasnuwara.

Traveling from Panduwasnuwara on the Chilaw – Wariyapola road, take the Narammala road (towards Panduwasnuwara Museum) from Kotambapitiya and you will reach Mavi Ela junction at the end of this road after 7.5 km. Turn left and after traveling 200 meters again divert on to the Mavi Ela – Hormbawa road which will lead you to Kirimatiyawa junction after 4.5 km. Continue straight towards Horombawa for a further 500m and you will come across a small board directing you to a road which leads to Kahatawilagedara Swarnaprathibimbaramaya Rajamaha Viharaya with the Tampita Viharaya. The temple lies about 200 meters down this road.

A Tampita Viharaya is a structure built on a wooden platform which rests on number of stone stumps usually 3-4 feet tall. The roof is held by a structure built of timber and the walls are generally made of wattle and daub. Walls inside the chamber is more or less always covered in paintings drawn mainly in Kandyan style.

It is said that the temple got its name due to the golden Buddha statue donated to the temple by king Nissanka Malla (1187-1196) of Polonnaruwa kingdom. This statue is displayed in a iron cage but in 2014 an attempt was made to steal the statue by treasure hunters. However this was foiled by the villagers and the statue was saved.

Kahatawilagedara Tampita Viharaya is believed to be built by king Wimaladharmasuriya II (1687 – 1707). and was declared as an Protected Archaeological Monument by the government by the gazette dated 24th July 2009.
