Kahatawilagedara Sri Swarnaprathibimbaramaya Tampita Rajamaha Viharaya

Kahatawilagedara Sri Swarnaprathibimbaramaya Tampita Rajamaha Viharaya is an ancient temple from the Kandyan era. It is located near the Kirimetiyawa junction, about 13 km from Narammala, 21 km from Wariyapola, and 12 km from Panduwasnuwara.

To reach the temple from Panduwasnuwara, take the Chilaw-Wariyapola road. Turn onto the Narammala road at Kotambapitiya, heading towards the Panduwasnuwara Museum. After 7.5 km, you’ll reach the Mavi Ela junction. Turn left, travel 200 meters, and then take the Mavi Ela – Hormbawa road. Follow this road for 4.5 km to the Kirimatiyawa junction. Continue straight for another 500 meters towards Horombawa. You’ll find a small sign pointing to the road leading to Kahatawilagedara Sri Swarnaprathibimbaramaya Rajamaha Viharaya. The temple is located about 200 meters down this road.

A Tampita Viharaya is a type of temple built on a wooden platform supported by stone pillars, typically around 3-4 feet high. The roof is made of timber, and the walls are usually constructed from wattle and daub. The inner chamber often features paintings, mostly in the Kandyan style.

This temple is named after a golden Buddha statue donated by King Nissanka Malla of the Polonnaruwa kingdom (1187-1196). The statue is displayed in an iron cage. In 2014, the villagers thwarted an attempt by treasure hunters to steal the statue, and the statue was saved.

Kahatawilagedara Tampita Viharaya is believed to have been built by King Wimaladharmasuriya II (1687 – 1707). It was officially designated as a protected archaeological monument by the Department of Archaeology, under Gazette No. 14737, dated 23 February 1967, and then again in the Gazette dated 24th July 2009.
