An Anurādhapura-period site near Akkuranai sits on a Maduru Oya tributary bank. It features six stone pillars—five upright and one fallen—showing ancient oval quarry marks. The original structure’s exact function remains unknown due to insufficient evidence.

The Archaeological Ruins Site 3 at Akkuraṇai are located in the village of Akkuraṇai, within the Grāma Niladhāri Division of Muruthtthanai 209-A, in the Divisional Secretariat Division of Kōrale Pattu South (Kiran) of Batticaloa District.

Access Route

From Kiran Junction, proceed along the Thureiyadi Road and cross the Pulipanchakal Bridge. Continue past the indigenous villages of Miniminiththaweli and Akkuranai, then travel approximately 1 km (0.6 miles) along the Pothana Road. A branch of the Maduru Oya, which flows alongside Akkuranai village, extends westward through the surrounding forest. The archaeological site is situated on the right bank of this branch, approximately 25 meters (82 feet) from its point of origin.

Historical Background

The architectural characteristics of the stone pillars found at this location indicate that the site dates to the Anuradhapura period.

Location and Archaeological Remains

In this area, a tributary of the Maduru Oya, flowing near Akkuranai village, branches off and runs westward. Approximately 25 meters (82 feet) west of the point where this branch begins are the remains of an ancient structure.

Among the visible archaeological remains are five short stone pillars that remain in good condition and are partially buried in the ground, together with a sixth pillar that has fallen. These pillars display distinctive features associated with the Anuradhapura period, including oval-shaped quarry marks that are characteristic of stone extraction techniques used during that era.

Although the pillars clearly belong to the Anuradhapura period, the available evidence is insufficient to determine the exact nature or function of the original structure to which they belonged.
