The Algama Ella is a charming six-meter waterfall in Kegalle, characterized by a unique “disappearing” flow that tunnels beneath narrow rock crevasses. Easily accessible from Pasyala, the site features a rocky viewing ledge and two additional upstream falls, offering a tranquil yet adventurous escape within the Uduwaka region.

Algama Ella is a modest waterfall with a height of approximately 6 meters, notable for being easily observable from close range due to a conveniently located rocky ledge nearby. After the initial fall, the flow of water becomes partially concealed as it passes through a narrow gap beneath the rocks.

Further downstream, a crevice approximately 3 meters in length can be observed, where the water once again disappears beneath overhanging tree branches, only to re-emerge from beneath a protruding rock formation. This continuous interplay of visibility and concealment adds a distinctive character to the waterfall’s flow.

Location and Access

The waterfall is located within the Kegalle District, specifically in the Dedigama electorate. Access from Colombo is via the Colombo–Kandy road. At the Pasyala four-way junction, turn right onto the Attanagalla road and proceed for approximately 4 kilometers. At Haggala junction, turn left onto the Algama road, continue through Algama, and proceed toward Uduwaka, where the waterfall is situated.

Alternatively, when approaching Algama from Attanagalla, just before reaching the Algama junction, a road branches off to the left. After traveling about 1.5 kilometers along this route, a sign marked “Vehicle Park of Algama Falls” can be seen on the left. From this point, access to the stream is required, followed by a short upstream trek to reach the falls.

Visitor Experience and Precautions

The site tends to attract a significant number of visitors, particularly during weekends, making early arrival advisable. In addition to Algama Ella, there are two other waterfalls located further upstream, which can be explored by continuing along the stream.

Visitors should exercise caution when navigating the area, as the rocks are often slippery and potentially hazardous.

Parking and Local Conditions

It is recommended to park vehicles in designated private parking areas, many of which are operated within nearby gardens. There have been reports of organized groups deflating the tires of vehicles parked outside these unofficial parking areas. As such, it is generally advisable to pay the protection money and park in a private garden.
