Travelling 2.6 km from Panamure town in Ratnapura District towards Embilipitiya, your are sure to miss the broken-down signboard of Ambagaha Vehera archaeological site unless your are keenly looking for it.

Not much history of this is site is known. No attempt had been made by the archaeology department to excavate or conserve any ruins at this site. The sign board directs just towards a forested area.

Walking in to this forested area, you will find barely visible signs of a large stupa on a hill now destroyed. Completely covered by the forest, only the exposed bricks on some parts tell you that this is not just a overgrown mound of earth.

Walking in to this forested path, you will come across more than one stupa which had been destroyed by treasure hunters. On one stupa, a stone pillar, which is probably the Yupa-Stambha can be seen in the central pit dug by the treasure hunters.

The large stupa is found after passing the above ruins towards a higher elevation. This too had been destroyed by treasure hunters. Parts of a stone wall surrounding this stupa can be still found scattered in various places.

It is a pity that these archaeological remains, which reflect the architectural features of a village temple which can be presumed to belong to the Anuradhapura period, have been abandoned like this. The presence of a stupa suggests that other Buddhist buildings must have existed in the surrounding area.

Special mention to Tharaka Dias, who had visited this site and left the only note on this site to be found.
