Baddegama is a well-known town in the Galle district. Since the construction of the Matara Expressway, the entrance to Hikkaduwa is now via Baddegama, making it a common route for many travellers.

Baddegama Ambalam is situated near Ging Ganga in Baddegama town. From Baddegama town, turn onto Nagoda Road and travel about 100 meters. The road curves around a lake-like channel and then merges with the old Hikkaduwa road, which runs parallel to Ging Ganga. Baddegama Ambalam is located at this junction, nestled among several small shops.

This ambalama is constructed in a square shape using brick and mortar. All sides are raised up to the roof except for the front, which features two windows and a central door. The roof is designed in the Kandy period ambalam style, with an increased slope in the middle of the four-bay roof. All the beams are connected to the Madol Kurupawa, which in turn is connected to a main cross rafter for added strength.

When asked about the history of this ambalama, several people in the bazaar mentioned that it dates back to their parent’s time, but they did not have further information about its history. A three-wheeler driver pointed to a stone pillar in the corner, stating that it also belonged to this ambalam. The description of this ambalam, written in English, is slightly worn out. However, by enlarging a photo of it, many of the letters could be identified.

BADDEGAMA

According to this pillar, Baddegama Ambalam was built to commemorate the coronation of King George V and Queen Mary of Britain on June 11, 1911. It also has the name of the person who made it but it is hard to read.

In addition, there is a stone step in front of the door. Upon careful study, it appears that this was placed later. 2 grooves (mortises) are cut in the two corners and the right corner XXII VI 1911 is cut in three rows. This also shows the date 22-6-1911. It is special that the date and month are written in Roman numerals and the year is written in Arabic numerals. Sometimes the person who made this amulet did not know how to write the number 1911 in Roman numerals, so it is thought that he took it from the Arabic numerals that are used in general.

This stone step must have originally been attached to the door of the building. During a later restoration, the stone step was removed, the door was placed directly on the cement floor and the stone block moved out as a step to the entrance.

Today, this ambalam is decaying. Locals say that an old man lives here, selling betel nut and betel leaves.
