During the era of British colonialism, a remarkable infrastructure emerged across various regions under British rule. Among the numerous structures that were erected, survey towers (also called Triangulation Stations or Trigonometrical Stations) played a significant role in the process of mapping and surveying the land. These towering structures not only served as vantage points for surveyors but also left a lasting legacy in the form of historical landmarks.
There are several such survey towers found in the Jaffna peninsula and on its islands. The Kudarappu Survey Tower lies on the eastern beach of Jaffna. The area is arid and there is no human habitation for kilometres except for occasional fishermen who may rest here.
This Trigonometrical Station is built on a square platform with 4 steps on all four sides. Four cylindrical pillars stand on the platform. The diameter of each cylinder gradually decreases as it goes higher. The Bottom cylinder is shorter than the other 3. The top 3 cylinders seem to be of the same height.
During the time LTTE Terrorists were operating and controlling the Jaffna peninsula, This beach faced multiple battles with the Sri Lankan forces. The bullet holes all over the tower stand witness to the horror it withstood in the past.
There is no easy access route to this beach as it lies in a lagoon. The best route is to travel through Vallipuram from Point Pedro and ride along the inner beach of the stretch for 16 kilometres. From here you can cross the sandy land to the outer beach of the land stip on a suitable vehicle or walk. The width is about 2km in this area.

Travelling Directions to Jaffna (Kudarappu Survey Tower)
Jaffna can be reached through two principal routes. The most commonly used approach is via Elephant Pass, which has long served as the traditional gateway to the Jaffna Peninsula.
An alternative route reaches Jaffna from the direction of Pooneryn by crossing the Sangupiddy Bridge. This crossing follows what was historically the ancient route to the peninsula before the construction of modern highways. The route provides a connection between Jaffna and the Mannar region.
