Megalithic cemeteries are ancient burial grounds characterized by the presence of large, prehistoric stone monuments, known as megaliths, which mark the graves of the deceased. These cemeteries are found across various regions of the world and are significant archaeological sites that offer insights into the burial practices, social structures, and religious beliefs of ancient societies.

The Bandaraduwa Megalithic Cemetery is an ancient pre-historic burial site located in the village of Bandaraduwa in Ampara District, Sri Lanka. This historical site is characterized by a significant number of cist burials.

In cist burials, the remains of the deceased, including vessels containing ashes or bone fragments, as well as other personal belongings used by the individual, are placed within a rectangular space formed by four stone slabs. A flat rock slab is then positioned over the burial to complete the structure. Cist burials have been found in an area of about 2½ acres at Bandaraduwa. The Archaeology department has uncovered 25 cist burials in this area. Burial grounds may cover a much bigger area and more cists remain to be discovered.

Bandaraduwa Megalithic Burial Site was declared a Protected Archaeological Monument by the gazette dated 12th June 2015 which describes the site as below’
