
Billewa Barathanaga Cave Temple near Thanthirimale Rajamaha Viharaya is a complex of ancient drip-ledge caves going back to the 3rd century BC. The caves lies in the Grama Niladhari Wasama No. 368, Nelumvi Galviharawewa in the Mahavillachchiya Divisional Secretary’s Division, Anuradhapura District.
The cave complex consists of number of inscriptions on the ledges and the largest cave has been donated by a person called Barathanaga to the priests according to the inscription on this cave. This inscription has been dated to 3rd century BC.
Pre-historic paintings and all caves with Brahmi Letters and other archaeological features in the Billewa Barathanaga Cave Temple Complex have been designated as protected archaeological monuments by the Department of Archaeology.
