The Bubula springs near Bibile consist of three natural wells discharging sixteen liters of water per second. Historically a vital resting point for Kataragama pilgrims, these clear, cool waters offer a constant flow, serving as a tranquil communal bathing site.
Bubula is a natural water spring located in close proximity to Bibile town. The site consists of three springs situated close to one another, collectively discharging approximately 16 liters of water per second. These springs form three separate wells, which can accommodate around ten people bathing at any given time.
The water emerging from Bubula originates from underground aquifers, rising naturally to the surface through fissures in the ground. The steady discharge throughout the year suggests a stable water source, sustained by the area’s underground water system. The water is clear and cool, maintaining a relatively constant temperature, which makes it suitable for bathing.
In ancient times, these wells are said to have functioned as an important resting and cleansing point for pilgrims traveling to Kataragama, one of the most revered religious destinations. The pilgrimage routes that passed through Bibile were frequently used by devotees undertaking long journeys on foot, and Bubula provided a reliable place to bathe, refresh, and purify themselves before continuing their journey.
The site is located approximately 500 meters (about 0.31 miles) from Bibile town, along the Bibile–Madagama–Nakkala Road (B56). This route also serves as the main road connecting Bibile to Monaragala.
