
Bulnewa Rajamaha Viharaya is an ancient temple lying in the Polpithigama Divisional Secretary’s Division in Bulnewa. The temple lie in an arid area between Polpithigama and Bulnewa, 54 kms from Kurunegala. From Kurunegala take the Dambulla road upto Ibbagamuwa and take the turn towards Kumbukgete/Madawala.This road will fall on to the roundabout at Galtanwewa after 27 kms. Take the road to the right from this junction and travel past Popithigama, Madagalla, Saliyagama and Moragollagama. Traveling 18 km down this road you will come across a narrow road to the right with an aged small concrete board directing you to Bulnewa Rajamaha Viharaya, Bulnewa – Pathana. The temple lie 800 meters down this road. Another 800 meters will bring you to a small remote ancient reservoir called Demodara Wewa.
This temple hides a Tampita Viharaya built during the Kandyan era. A Tampita Viharaya is a structure built on a wooden platform which rests on number of stone stumps usually 3-4 feet tall. The roof is held by a structure built of timber and the walls are generally made of wattle and daub. Walls inside the chamber is more or less always covered in paintings drawn mainly in Kandyan style.
The Tampita Viharaya at the Bulnewa Rajamaha Viharaya was declared as an protected archaeological site on 23rd January 2009 by gazette number 1586.
