If you are traveling to Somawathi Chethiya, the last populated village before entering the Somawathi jungles is Sungavila, an agricultural settlement that relies primarily on paddy cultivation.
Devalagodella, an area within Sungavila, first drew national attention when LTTE Tamil Tiger Terrorists attacked villagers on 16 December 1987, killing nine people, including five members of one family. Disguised in army uniforms and armed with small weapons, the attackers hacked the farmers to death before fleeing in a lorry. This incident is considered one of the LTTE’s earliest assaults on unarmed civilians.
The site known as Devalagodella, containing ruins of buildings and other archaeological features linked to the geographical data referenced below, located in Sungavila Village within Grama Niladhari Division No. 138 of Jayabima in the Lankapura Divisional Secretariat Division, Polonnaruwa District, North Central Province, was officially declared an archaeological monument on 1 February 2023.
