If you are traveling to Somawathi Chethiya, the last populated village you will come across is Sungavila before entering the jungles of Somawathi. Sungavila is an agricultural village which mainly depends on paddy cultivation.
Devalagodella, an area of Sungavila, first came in to the national news when the Tamil Tiger Terrorists, LTTE attacked some civilians of Devalagodella, killing 9 people including 5 members of one family. The terrorists, dressed in army uniforms and armed with small arms and sharp weapons, hacked to death the farmers on 16th December 1987 before fleeing the area in a lorry. This was one of the very first attacks by the LTTE on innocent civilians.
The site known as Devalagodella with ruins of buildings and other archaeological factors allotted by Geographical data Nos. mentioned below in Sungawila Village in the Grama Niladhari Division No. 138 of Jayabima in Lankapura Divisional Secretary’s Division in Polonnaruwa District, North Central Province was declared as an archaeological is monument in 1st February 2023.
