Lieutenant General Denzil Kobbekaduwa was a highly decorated and respected General in the Sri Lanka army. He was assassinated along with 9 other military officers in a land mine explosion in the Jaffna peninsula on August 8th 1992. On August 8th 1994 army erected a memorial on the location where the Tamil Tiger Terrorists (LTTE) blew the land mine which killed the Lieutenant General. With the army moving out of the area this memorial too was destroyed by the LTTE.
Exactly 10 years later in 2004, the memorial was again reconstructed by the navy. There is also a replica of how the blasted jeep would have been set up at the roadside.
Driving Directions
Take the route to Nagadeepa from Jaffna town. The road travels over several beautiful causeways. 12 km down the road a notice board at a 4-way intersection would direct you to turn right. The memorial lies about 2 km down alongside this road.

Traveling Directions to Gen. Kobbakaduwa Memorial at Jaffna
Jaffna can be reached through two principal routes. The most commonly used approach is via Elephant Pass, which has long served as the traditional gateway to the Jaffna Peninsula.
An alternative route reaches Jaffna from the direction of Pooneryn by crossing the Sangupiddy Bridge. This crossing follows what was historically the ancient route to the peninsula before the construction of modern highways. The route provides a connection between Jaffna and the Mannar region.
