A towering ribbon of water plunging 100 m from the Galaha Forest Reserve, Gerandigini Ella is one of Sri Lanka’s most dramatic waterfalls, found in the Ramboda area. Visible from miles away yet best admired from its remote viewpoint, this serpentine cascade offers scale, scenery, and adventure in equal measure.

There are several narrow, elongated waterfalls in Sri Lanka known as Garandi Ella, a name that literally translates to Rat Snake Waterfall. Their serpentine appearance, resembling a slithering rat snake, has led to many such falls sharing this name. The most popular and widely recognized among them is Gerandi Ella (also known as Gerandigini Ella) in the Tawalantanna area.

Gerandigini Ella Falls is a combination of several cascades with a total height of approximately 270 m. Owing to its impressive scale, the waterfall is visible from a considerable distance. The stream originates in the Galaha Forest Reserve, flows past Galbithiya, and eventually joins the Puna Oya.

Gerandigini Ella can be seen directly from the A5 road near Pussellawa, and on clear days it is even visible from the Kotmale Valley. However, the most rewarding view is from the dedicated viewpoint, which offers a perspective roughly level with the uppermost section of the waterfall.

Gerandigini Ella Viewpoint

Reaching the Gerandigini Ella Viewpoint requires a separate journey. The route involves travelling approximately 11 km (about 6.8 miles) along challenging estate roads. From the Gampola–Ramboda road, the turn-off is via the Fortroft Estate road near the Rothschild Tea Factory and Lounge. Those travelling independently are advised to follow Google Maps, while hiring a tuk-tuk is an alternative, though it can be relatively costly.

The Fortroft Estate road begins as a narrow track but gradually widens. The first 5 km are in reasonably good condition, apart from occasional potholes. In contrast, the final 2 km are in very poor condition, typical of remote estate roads that appear to have seen little or no maintenance since colonial times.

If travelling by tuk-tuk or motorcycle, it is possible to reach very close to the viewpoint by vehicle. From there, a short walk followed by a brief descent via a few steps leads to the viewing point itself.
