The Anurādhapura-period Muruthtthanai Buddhist Stupa Ruins in Kiran consist of a 5-meter-high, entirely brick monument hidden in a wooded hillock. Heavily damaged by treasure hunters who excavated a large pit from its summit, the site also features an ancient rock quarry 200 meters away for architectural stone extraction.

The Muruthtthanai Buddhist Stupa Ruins are located in the village of Muruthtthanai, within the Grāma Niladhāri Division of Muruthtthanai 209-A, in the Divisional Secretariat Division of Kōrale Pattu South (Kiran).

Access Route

From Kiran Junction, travel along the Thureiyadi road. At the Pulipañchakal Junction, turn right and continue through the Nāpathtthāwil Wewa Reservoir area and Akkuraṇai to reach the Indigenous village of Miniminiththāweli. Proceed approximately 500 meters (1,640 feet) through the village, passing the Amman Kovil. The stupa is located within a small wooded area on a hillock behind the houses.

Historical Background

Based on the archaeological evidence preserved at the site, this monument can be identified as a stupa dating to the Anurādhapura period.

Location and Nature of Archaeological Evidence

The ruins are situated to the east of the Amman Kovil, behind a cluster of houses in the village of Muruthtthanai. The ruins, which appear to have been constructed entirely of brick, stand approximately 5 meters (16.4 feet) high within a small forested area.

The stupa has been damaged by treasure hunters. A large pit excavated from the summit has exposed approximately 3 meters (9.8 feet) of the internal brick structure. Numerous bricks from the monument are scattered around the site, providing further evidence of the extent of the disturbance.

Approximately 200 meters (650 feet) southeast of the stupa is a rock quarry that appears to have been used in antiquity for the extraction and shaping of stone pillars and other architectural elements. This quarry may have served as a source of construction material for the stupa and associated structures in the surrounding area.
