The Garandi Ella of Ettampitiya (Etampitiya) is a rather unknown waterfall away from the hustle and bustle in a picturesque landscape on the Uma Oya.
There are a number of waterfalls in Sri Lanka named ‘Gerandi Ella’. Gerandi is the Sinhalese name for the Rat Snake. Thus tall waterfalls falling in a thin stream which resembles a snake are generally called Gerandi Ella by surrounding villagers.
Some of these are
- Ettampitiya Gerandi Ella Waterfall
- Kalugala Gerandi Ella Waterfall
- Passara Gerandi Ella Waterfall
- Gerandi Gini Ella Waterfall
- Gerandi Rikili Ella Waterfall
This Ettampitiya Gernadi Ella waterfall is wider than its height and during the rainy season, the width can exceed 100 feet. This fall does not resemble a snake thus why this waterfall was named Gerandi Ella remains a mystery.
According to legends and folklore King Walagamba (Watta Gamini Abaya – 89-77 BC) is connected to most of the caves, temples and waterfalls in this area. It is said that the king used to bathe at this waterfall during his exile (104BC – 89BC) in this area.
Ettampitiya Gerandi Ella lies about 10km off the Ettampitiya Town. To reach this waterfall from Ettampitiya travel about 9.5km on the Gawela road which lies next to the main bus stand. The cost of a 3-wheeler will be around Rs. 300-400. Once you reach the end of the road you need to trek about 300 meters to the waterfall. It’s easy to go to the bottom of the falls or even to the top.
