Hewawissa Ambalama is one of the many Ambalamas (wayside rests) in the Pahathahewaheta area. The Ambalama at Hewawissa lies in a picturesque farming area away from the main roads.

The building is built upon 8 cylindrical pillars with a shape typical on most brick and mortar Ambalams of this era. Four pillars mark the outside corners of the building. Eight more wooden pillars between the brick and mortar pillars provide additional support. Four brick and mortar pillars mark the inner square of the Ambalama. These 16 pillars support the roof of the building.

The Ambalama has been renovated in the recent past and it has been tiled with clay Calicut tiles (rata ulu). Across a canal close by you will also notice a large granite slab which had served as a bridge on the ancient road across this paddy field.

To reach the Ambalama, travel on the Haragama road from Kandy and take the Thalatuoya road towards Marassana. Passing Marassana and take the road to Pasgama. Close to Pasagama, take the Weerasinhe Mawatha close to the Hewawissa Vidalaya Playground. The Ambalama lies about 2 km down this road.

Update

A drunk driver has crashed on this ancient ambalama recently destroying the whole structure. Only the foundation and the rubble of the structure exist today. The marker on the Google Map below points to an approximate location. Please see the directions above.
