Located near the Kaddumurivu Kulam reservoir, this Anuradhapura-period site features a sixteen-pillar building with a widened central layout. Despite its intact pillar grid, the site is under threat from surrounding agricultural activities, which have led to the displacement and gradual destruction of ancient brickwork and secondary ruins.
The Kaddumurivu Kulam Ruins Site is located near the bund of the Kaddumurivu Kulam reservoir, within the area of Kaddumurivu, under the Kaddumurivu 213-R Grama Niladhari Division and the Korala Pattu North (Vakarai) Divisional Secretariat. The site preserves structural remains that are characteristic of the Anuradhapura Period.
Location and Access
The site is situated approximately 200 m (650 ft) east of the bund of the Kaddumurivu Kulam reservoir, adjacent to the Kaddumurivu Junction. This junction lies about 20 km (12.4 miles) along the Kaddumurivu Cross Road, on the left-hand side of the main road from Vakarai to Kadiraveli.
Historical Background
The construction techniques of the monument, along with the finishing style of the remaining artifacts, correspond to architectural traditions of the Anuradhapura Period.
Site Layout and Archaeological Features
This building site, located close to the reservoir bund, measures approximately 3 × 4 m (9.8 × 13.1 ft). The structure is arranged in four rows of stone pillars, with each row consisting of four pillars.
The layout suggests that the central space was intentionally widened, with the four corner pillars set slightly apart, possibly to accommodate a specific functional or structural requirement. All sixteen pillars remain in their original positions, with an average height of approximately 42 cm (0.42 m / 1.4 ft).
Associated Structures and Conditions
To the east of the main structure, there is another ruined building site. This area contains a significant scatter of ancient bricks, indicating the presence of additional structural remains.
Ongoing agricultural activities in the vicinity have led to the displacement and gradual destruction of artifacts, posing a continuing threat to the preservation of the site.
Geographical Coordinates
The exact location of the site is as follows:
Latitude: 8° 08′ 13.5″ N
Longitude: 81° 19′ 34.4″ E
