
Kotamudungala Raja Maha Viharaya is believed to be built by King Vatta Gamini Abaya aka King Walagamba between 103 BC – 89BC, who said to use this area to train his armies during his hiding from South Indian invaders.
The two inscriptions below the drip ledge of the main cave at the the entrance is written in characters similar to one used in 3rd – 2nd centaury BC.
current paintings on the temple is similar in style to Dambulla Cave Temple.

The temple can be reached from Kandy – Kurunegala Road. Turn to the Harankahawa-Bokkawela road at Arambekade junction. The temple is about 8km down this road in the village of Molagoda.
