The first thing which comes in to mind when you speak about Pelwatta is the massive Sugar Plantation. However, thousands of years ago this area was a thriving Buddhist community with temples dotting the landscape.

Taking the road towards the entrance of the Pelwatte Sugar Plantation from Pelwatta Juction and travelling for 3 km will bring you to the Kukurampola Junction. Another 1.5 km from here over the Kukurampola reservoir will bring you to the ancient Kukukuwa Rajamaha Viharaya.

The temple consists of an ancient dilapidated stupa, now resembling a mound of earth. You will find several granite artefacts from the ancient temple gathered around this stupa.
