The Makeli Ella in Kalutara is a picturesque 10-meter waterfall, famously compared to a bride’s delicate veil. Located near the Kukuleganga project, it features a scenic upstream pool and the fairytale-like Thumodara islet. Though now restricted to viewing from platforms, its weathered granite boulders remain a natural marvel.

Location and Access

Situated along the route to the Kukuleganga Holiday Resort, Makeli Ella is among the more frequently visited waterfalls located within close proximity to Colombo. The waterfall lies within the Kalutara District. To reach the site, one must travel along the Matugama–Agalawatte road to Lathpandura, and from there proceed via the Molkava road.

Present Conditions

Prior to the construction of the Kukuleganga Project, this venue was a popular place for bathing. However, with the development of the project, a viewing platform has been constructed overlooking the river, and bathing is now prohibited.

Physical Characteristics

The Makeli Ella waterfall has a height of approximately 10 meters. From a distance, its cascading water os said to resemble the delicate veil of a bride. The surrounding terrain is dotted with rounded granite boulders that have been shaped over time by natural weathering processes.

Upstream of the waterfall lies a large natural pool. About 6 meters downstream, there is a picturesque islet-like watershed known as Thumodara, which evokes a fairytale-like setting. Beyond this point, the streams converge and flow into the Kuda Oya, eventually joining the Kalu Ganga before reaching the sea.
