The Anurādhapura-period Mullipoththanei ruins in Kiran, Batticaloa occupy a 100-square-meter clearing amidst paddy fields. The site features two standing 30-centimeter stone pillars and scattered pottery fragments, though a nearby building complex was reportedly uprooted by locals years ago.

Historical Background

Although only a limited number of archaeological remains survive today, the existing evidence confirms that structures dating to the Anuradhapura period once stood at this location.

Location and Nature of Archaeological Evidence

The archaeological remains are confined to a small area of approximately 100 square meters, surrounded by paddy fields. Two stone pillars, each about 30 cm (12 in) in height, remain in their original positions. Fragments of ancient pottery are scattered throughout the surrounding paddy fields, indicating the former extent of the settlement.

Approximately 500 meters (0.3 miles) northwest of this site is another location where a number of stone pillars have been gathered together. It has been reported that the remains of an ancient building were uprooted and removed by local villagers some years ago.
