Muruthawela Gini Petti Palama

For travellers seeking to move beyond the well-trodden routes, Muruthawela Gini Petti Pālama—literally the “Matchbox Bridge”—offers a peaceful and refreshing retreat centered around water and rural scenery.

The story of Gini Petti Pālama is closely tied to the Muruthawela Wewa Reservoir, the large body of water that feeds the canal spanned by the structure. Archaeological surveys conducted around 2013 revealed that the lands now submerged beneath the reservoir were once active settlements within the ancient Rohana region.

Structure and Engineering

The Gini Petti Pālama itself is a small yet distinctive structure located on the left-bank main canal of Muruthawela Wewa. This section lies approximately 800 meters (about 0.5 miles) downstream from the reservoir’s origin.

At this point, the canal divides into two narrow concrete channels constructed above surrounding paddy fields, with a ford (sapattu pālama) situated below. After crossing this depression, the water returns to a ground-level canal.

Despite its name, the Gini Petti Pālama is not a bridge for human passage. Instead, it is an elevated concrete canal—essentially a “bridge for water”—often running above another stream. Its Sinhala name derives from its compact, box-like shape, which resembles a matchbox. While similar structures exist elsewhere in Sri Lanka, the example at Muruthawela is among the most well-known in the southern region.

Natural Landscape

One of the primary attractions of the site is its scenic rural setting. The canal is framed by lush paddy fields and an intricate network of water channels, creating a tranquil and visually appealing environment.

The Muruthawela Wewa Reservoir itself is surrounded by a range of hills, providing a striking contrast to the flat agricultural plains of the dry zone. The reservoir covers approximately 930 acres (about 376 hectares), offering expansive views of open water reflecting the surrounding landscape.

Visitors can experience a sense of calm rural life, largely untouched by urban development. The combination of flowing water and verdant greenery makes the area particularly suitable for photography and quiet relaxation.

Bathing and Recreation

For many visitors, the highlight of Gini Petti Pālama is the opportunity for a refreshing bath. The canal carries a steady flow of clean water from the reservoir, making it suitable for bathing.

Although the bridge itself is the main landmark, the preferred bathing location is near the origin of the canal at the reservoir, along the same road. Designated bathing spots have been developed by project authorities to ensure safe access while preserving traditional community use of the water.

Visitor Safety and Local Advice

Caution is advised during the rainy season, as water levels and flow speed can increase suddenly, creating potentially hazardous conditions. Visitors are encouraged to consult local residents before entering the water to identify safe bathing areas and to assess current conditions.

Within the reservoir area, there are two main bridges, and the most favorable water flow for bathing is typically found just below the second bridge.

Access and Travel Routes

Muruthawela Gini Petti Pālama can be conveniently included in a southern Sri Lanka travel itinerary, particularly for those visiting nearby attractions such as Kalametiya Bird Sanctuary, which lies about an hour’s drive away.

There are two primary access routes:

From Matara, travel via Hakmana and Walasmulla to Julampitiya, covering approximately 45 kilometers (about 28 miles).

From Embilipitiya, proceed through Middeniya and Walasmulla to Julampitiya, a shorter journey of about 27 kilometers (around 16.8 miles).

When approaching from the Middeniya direction, the Gini Petti bridge is easily visible as you near the Muruthawela area.
