When the name Nil Diya is mentioned in Sri Lanka, most people immediately think of the well-known underground cave in Ella. However, hidden deep within the Hambantota District lies a far less familiar natural wonder: the Nil Diya Bubula of Julampitiya.

Often described as the village’s “Blue Sapphire,” this natural spring stands as a striking example of the island’s lesser-known geological beauty. For those seeking an experience away from well-trodden tourist paths, it offers a truly rewarding discovery.

Julampitiya is a quiet rural settlement near Muruthawela in the Hambantota District of the Southern Province. Surrounded by the lush greenery of paddy fields, the site is closely interwoven with the agricultural life of the local community.

True to its name (Nil Diya, meaning Blue Water), the pool displays a vivid turquoise or gem-like blue hue. This striking color becomes especially vivid when sunlight falls upon the water, reflecting off the pale sandy bottom and highlighting the clarity created by its mineral-rich composition.

The pool is approximately 3–3.7 meters (10–12 feet) deep. The surface of the pond produces gentle ripples, revealing the steady pressure of the underground aquifer that feeds it.

According to local tradition, the spring has never dried up, even during the most severe droughts experienced in the Hambantota region. It forms part of a network of nearly twelve smaller springs in the surrounding area, although this one is regarded as the largest and most visually striking.
