Once you turn to the Pallanoya from the Wadinagala Junction on the Siyambalanduwa – Ampara road, you will pass the Pallanoya bridge ater about 2km. Another 1.5 km on this road will being you to the ancient Pannathgoda Rajamaha Viharaya. There is no display board of any sought on the Pallanoya road at the turn off to the temple. This is a non descriptive narrow concrete road next to a dilapidated shop building.
The temple lies on top of a rocky hillock hidden away from the main road. Like many other ancient temples in this region, this temple too is believed to be built by the Saddhatissa, brother of King Dutugemunu who ruled this area as as a regional king during the reign of Dutugenumu.
There is an ancient pagoda, few ponds, remains of a “Devalaya”, and few inscriptions in the surrounding area of the temple. Yet the most fascinating is the granite map of Sri lanka done during king Saddathissa’s time.
