The first thing which comes in to mind when you speak about Palwatta is the massive Sugar Plantation. However thousands of years ago this area was a thriving Buddhist community with temples dotting the landscape.
Sri Devagiri Rajamaha Viharaya lies 7 kms from the Palwatta Junction towards Passara. This this the third of the 3 Rajamaha Vihara lying along the Passara Road from Palawatta. The first one is the Mulgiri Rajamaha Viharaya, the second is the Sri Ovagiri Rajamaha Viharaya.
The temple premises is scattered with granite artifacts of a temple which had existed a millennia ago. Broken pillars carved of rock can be seen standing in several places, the only remains of ancient buildings. Various shaped and sized flower alters carved out out rock, partial guard stones and other artifacts can be seen scattered around the temple.
