Periyathaddamunai Archaeological Site with Pillars

The Periyathaddamunai site is a localized archaeological point in Vakarai featuring an isolated stone pillar from the Anuradhapura Period. Located on elevated ground east of local paddy fields, this lone monolith provides evidence of ancient structure in a currently desolate landscape.

The site with stone pillars at Periyathaddamunai, located in Uriyankaddu 213 within Korale Pattu North (Vakare), represents an isolated archaeological feature attributed to the Anuradhapura period.

Access Route

The location can be reached by traveling from the Vakare Government Hospital toward Kathiraveli. From this route, proceed along the road for approximately 1 km (0.62 miles), and then continue about 200 m (0.12 miles) east of the Thaddumunai forest area to reach the site on the left-hand side.

Historical Background

The pillar is believed to date to the Anuradhapura period, based on the presence of stone socket features that closely resemble those used in construction during that era.

Location and Archaeological Evidence

The pillar is situated on elevated ground to the east of the Periyathaddamunai paddy field. No additional archaeological remains have been identified in the surrounding area, making this a solitary structural element. The stone pillar stands approximately 1.54 m (5.05 feet) in height and is characterized by a rough surface texture. It also features oval-shaped stone socket holes, which may have been used to support structural components in its original context.
