Jaffna peninsula has three known bottomless wells lying at Nilavarai, Pokkanai and in Mayakkai. The most well known is the Nilavarai Well which attracts a large number visitors from all over the island. Very few are aware of the other two bottomless wells also lying in the Jaffna Penisula.
The Pokkani Deep Well lies 10 kilometers off Jaffna town off Palali Road. The well is created by an opening on the limestone layer on the ground. These wells generally are formed by the collapse of the top limstone layer creating a under ground cavern which connects to a water source after a time.
