Puna Ella, a majestic double waterfall near Ramboda, is renowned for its unique ‘Y’ shape where two distinct water sources—Puna Oya and Pundalu Oya merge. Often called the Ramboda Falls, this 100-meter cascade offers a dramatic contrast between forest-fed and cultivation-fed streams, creating a breathtaking roadside spectacle.
The Ramboda Ella (Puna Ella) double fall is unique in its ‘Y’ formation, where two separate waterfalls, fed by separate sources, merge into a single flow at the base. The water in the left cascade originates from Puna Oya, a canal that flows through the forest reserve above.
Until recently, this waterfall was commonly referred to as Ramboda Ella, as it is by far the tallest among the waterfalls formed by Puna Oya in this region. Dr Kautzsch also identified this as Ramboda Ella. However, the name is now applied to the three waterfalls located upstream Upper Ramboda Ella, Center Ramboda Ella, and Lower Ramboda Ella. Consequently, this particular fall is now more accurately known as Puna Ella.
The cascade on the right-hand side is formed by waters from Pundalu Oya, which flows through cultivated land above. For most of the year, the Pundalu Oya fall carries a greater volume of water, but during extended droughts, this pattern reverses. The left cascade, fed by Puna Oya, maintains a relatively consistent flow, while the right cascade diminishes significantly.
This waterfall is known by several names. Puna Ella (Puna Falls) and Poonawa Ella (Poonawa Falls) are the most widely used. Since the two cascades originate from Puna Oya and Pundalu Oya, they are sometimes individually referred to as Puna Ella and Pundalu Oya Ella. However, in general usage, the entire formation is referred to as Puna Ella, as the name Pundalu Oya Falls is already associated with Dunsinane Falls in the Nuwara Eliya District.
This waterfall can be viewed along the Peradeniya–Nuwara Eliya route, between Pussellawa and Ramboda.

Beautiful waterfall. We always stop our vehicles here during our Nuwara Eliya tours. Tourists also love this place.
