Fallen pillars at Sallitivu Archaeological Site
Fallen pillars at Sallitivu Archaeological Site

The site with ancient pillar ruins at Sallithivu, located within the Panichchankerni 211-C Grama Niladhari Division of Korale Pattu North (Vakarai), preserves the remains of an ancient structure believed to date to the Anuradhapura Era. The surviving stone pillars provide evidence of a former building complex that once existed at the location.

Access Route

From Oddamavadi town, travel along the Trincomalee (A15) main road until reaching the Sallithivu junction. From there, turn right and continue approximately 100 m (0.06 miles) along the road running between the Kovil temple and the army camp. Then proceed for about 500 m (0.31 miles) along the Kannaki Amman road to reach the site, which is situated near the houses of Rasamani and Perurani.

Location and Nature of Archaeological Evidence

Several stone pillars uprooted by treasure hunters now remain scattered at the site. These pillars clearly indicate the existence of an ancient building at this location. However, unless appropriate conservation and protection measures are implemented, it is likely that these remaining ruins may also disappear over time.

The stone pillars display oval-shaped chisel marks, a feature commonly associated with Anuradhapura period stone craftsmanship. These characteristics further support the identification of the structure as belonging to that historical era.
