Located at the foot of the Samanalathanna mountain range, the ruins of ancient buildings, ponds, and a stupa at the Samanalathanna Forest Hermitage in Dehiaththakandiya are believed to date from the Polonnaruwa era (11th–13th centuries). The site is spread over approximately 10 hectares (25 acres), and several ancient drip-ledged caves are still used today as residences and meditation kuti for the bhikkhus of the forest hermitage.

The ruins were formally declared a protected archaeological monument by the Department of Archaeology under the Gazette issued on 10 October 2014. The notification describes the protected site as follows:

“232. Samanalathanna mountain range with drip-ledged cave complex, hillock of Chaitya, Chronicles, ponds and place containing ruins of buildings at the foot of the mountain range at the place of (Latitude 07º 40′ 36” N and Longitude 081º 4′ 49.5” E) near the premises of Samanalathanna Vihara in Samanalathanna village, situated in Grama Niladhari Division No. 142/N, Kadirapura, in the Divisional Secretary’s Division of Dehiaththakandiya, in the Ampara District, in the Eastern Province.”
