The building that now houses the Sri Lankan Airlines Cargo section on Sir Baron Jayathilaka Mawatha was originally constructed by the Dutch and served as the office of the Dutch Governor in 1786. It was later renovated by the British in 1850, giving it the unique character it carries today.
During the British renovation, four semi-circular arches were introduced in place of the original Dutch pillars. The corridor was further enhanced with horizontal Doric-style detailing. The upper floor still retains distinct Dutch features, such as high windows with wooden louvers and short cylindrical pillars.
Blending both Dutch and British colonial influences, this building remains one of Colombo’s best-preserved examples of Dutch-British hybrid colonial architecture.
