An “ambalama” is a traditional open-sided shelter or resting place commonly found in Sri Lanka. Historically, ambalama were constructed along ancient trade routes and paths to provide travellers with a place to rest, seek shelter from the elements, and socialize. These structures typically feature a simple roof supported by pillars or columns, with no walls, allowing for natural ventilation.

Ambalama were traditionally built using local materials such as wood, thatch, or palm leaves. Today, while many ambalama have fallen into disrepair, some have been preserved as cultural landmarks or are maintained for use by travellers and locals alike.

Thibbotugoda Ambalama is a brick and mortar structure with six brick pillars holding the roof. Half of the Ambalama has full hight walls to protect the occupants from rain. The pillars are plain and carry no artwork. The roof is tiled with Calicut tiles.

To reach this ambalama, travel towards Dalathara from Gampaha town and take the left turn from Kirindivita Junction. Travel 1,8km on this road and turn left again to Saddhananda Nahimi Mawatha. Travel 130 m up to the narrow bridge over the Attananagalu Oya. Walk across this bridge and the narrow path across the lush paddy fields to find the first Ambalama, Horagolla Ambalama. Walk past this ambalama for another 500 meters to reach the Thibbotugoda Ambalama.
