Situated in the Ratnapura district belonging to the Atakalan Korale Thambagamu Pattu Pallebedda Village the Sri Sankapala Raja Maha Viharaya lies on the outskirts of Ratnapura – Hambantota main road near the 24th milepost. It is a 5 hour journey from Colombo through Ratnapura.

Traveling about three-quarters of a mile from Sri Sankhapala Rajamaha Viharaya towards Pallebedda one would come across that rock where ruins are present. The people of the village believe that this is the place where Pussadeva, one of the 10 Generals of King Dutugemunu (161-137 BCE) has been cremated.

Here rest the remains of a small Dagoba, erected on a square base with a side length of 34 feet. This circular Stupa boasts a perimeter of 60 feet. The site is called “Pussadeva Sohona“, “Pussadeva Maha Seya” and “Sankapala Sohona“. While there are no additional remnants visible in this location, the archaeological significance of this site should not be undermined.

In 1920’s this stupa was broken into by treasure hunters. It is said that they have only found a stone chest with some ash. The stone chest was discarded in the nearby jungle.
