Udawela Rajamaha Viharaya Ruins at Wellawaya – වැල්ලවාය උඩවෙල රජ මහා විහාරය නටබුණ්
Udawela Rajamaha Viharaya is another ancient but a forgotten temple probably belonging to the Ruhunu Kingdom. The temple lies off the Ella – Wellawaya road lost to the outside world.
Ruins of ancient buildings and buddhist monuments lie scattered around the temple. An ancient bodhi tree lies next to an ancient stupa resembling a mound of bricks. A pinnacle (koth kerella) and a ‘Chatra Gala’ carved out of granite lies neglected on the ground.
On another side lies a group of granite pillars which had held a building still stands after thousands of years of neglect.
This temple can be reached by taking the right hand turn (towards Mallaththawa school) after traveling 3.7 km from Wellawaya. The temple lies just after the bridge across Kirindi Oya.
