Udugama Sri Sunethrarama Tampita Viharaya – උඩුගම ශ්රී සුනේත්රාරාම ටැම්පිට විහාරය
Udugama Sri Sunethrarama Tampita Viharaya is an ancient Buddhist temple with a Tampita Viharaya belonging to the Kandyan era. The temple lies about 15 km from the colombo Kandy road passing Rambukkana on the Polgahawela Road. The route is to take the Rambukkanana road passing Kegalle town on the Colombo – Kandy road. Passing Rambukkana Railway Station and the Wahawa Bridge over Maha Oya, Turn left to the Polgahawela Road. Travel 4.1 km on this road to find the temple by the road.
A Tampita Viharaya is a structure built on a wooden platform which rests on number of stone stumps usually 3-4 feet tall. The roof is held by a structure built of timber and the walls are generally made of wattle and daub. Walls inside the chamber is more or less always covered in paintings drawn mainly in Kandyan style.
Udugama Sri Sunethrarama Tampita Viharaya was declared as a protected archaeological monument by the gazette dated 1st November 1996. According to Yatawara S (2009), this temple belongs to the era of Rajasinghe II. The paintings and the statues are well preserved.
