Travelling 13.5 km from Ampara town on the Maha Oya road, you will come across the steel bridge across Andal Oya. Just as you pass the bridge, there is a narrow tar road to the left which leads to Walagampura settlement (Walagampura Road).

Travel 2.8 km on this road to Walagampura Raja Maha Viharaya and continue another 2.8km along the Namaloya Irrigation Canal to reach the Walagampura Vidyaloka Vidyalaya. Travel 300 meters on the gravel road just as you pass the school to reach the Uthurupawwa Archaeological Ruins.

Uthurupawwa Archaeological Site lies on the slopes of the Madankanda rocky mountain. It consists of several natural caves with drip ledges carved to stop rainwater dripping into the cave and some of these caves record in stone the donations of individual caves made by the laymen to the Sangha in the ancient past.

At the foot of the mountain lies a dilapidated ancient stupa now resembling a mound of earth and other ruins of the ancient monastery scattered around.
